Belgian anti-terror raid in Verviers 'leaves two dead'

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-30840160

Two people have been killed in an anti-terror operation in eastern Belgium, local officials say.

A third person was wounded in the raid in the town of Verviers, according to Belgian TV. Several arrests have been made.

Witnesses reported hearing heavy gunfire for several minutes and at least three explosions.

Unconfirmed reports said raids were also taking place in Brussels and elsewhere in Belgium.

An official quoted by AFP news agency said the raid in Verviers was "jihadist-related".

"An operation is under way," a source in the mayor's office told AFP, but gave no details.

The area around the train station has been cordoned off and reports on social media say there is a heavy police presence in the town centre.

Media reports suggested those targeted were suspected jihadists who had recently returned from Syria.

Intelligence had indicated that they had been planning an attack, the reports added.

Verviers is in the province of Liege and has a population of about 56,000.........>

Greece arrests over Belgian 'jihadist terror plot'

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-30865316

Greek police have arrested several people over alleged links to a suspected terror plot in Belgium.

One of the men is alleged to have been in contact with the cell in Verviers, Belgium, where a shootout with police left two suspects dead on Thursday.

Europe is on high alert after Islamist gunmen killed 17 people in Paris. More than 20 people have been arrested in Belgium, France and Germany.

Troops were deployed across Belgium on Saturday to guard potential targets.

Belgium launched a series of raids on Thursday evening on a group of suspected jihadists.

Guns, munitions and explosives, as well as police uniforms and a large amount of money, were all seized by police during the operation.

Prosecutors said the group had planned to kill police officers and they charged five people on Friday with "participating in the activities of a terrorist group".............>

Brussels raid: Suspect killed in anti-terror operation

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-35809974
19 minutes ago

One suspect has been shot dead, officials say, and as many as two others are said to be on the run after a counter-terrorism raid in Brussels.

The suspects were believed to have been barricaded in a flat after earlier firing shots at the police.

Four police officers were wounded in the south Brussels suburb of Forest.

The raid was linked to last year's Paris attacks in which 130 people died. Islamic State (IS) militants have claimed responsibility for the attacks.

French police also took part in Tuesday's operation.............>

I was hoping the terrorists caught were the two that escaped from the Paris bombing but apparently not.

Three dead and nine injured in Belgium train crash

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-36457186

6 June 2016

At least three people have been killed and nine injured in a train crash in the Belgian town of Hermalle-sous-Huy, near Liege, latest reports say.

A passenger train crashed into the back of a goods train at high speed about 23:00 (21:00 GMT), said Belgium's rail infrastructure manager, Infrabel.

The two trains were on the same track, a spokesman for Infrabel said.

A witness told French newspaper L'Avenir that the train carriages were completely destroyed.

The passenger train, with about 40 people on board, was travelling between Liege and Namur at about 90 km/h (55mph) when it hit the goods train.

"Two of the six carriages derailed and are lying on the tracks," said a statement issued by Infrabel and the national rail operator, SNCB.

Some of those injured had to be freed from the wreckage and are in serious condition, officials say.

Belgian police find 'knives and shotgun' in car after man tries to drive into crowd

23 March 2017

Police in the northern Belgian city of Antwerp said on Thursday they had detained a man who tried to enter the main pedestrianised shopping street in a car at high speed, adding security in the city would be stepped up.

"At about 11 am this morning a vehicle entered De Meir at high speed due to which pedestrians had to jump away," a police spokesman told a news conference, referring to the street name.

The Belgian prosecutor's office said a 39 year old man had been arrested and that police found knives, a shotgun and a gas can with an unknown liquid in the car.

The suspect was named as Mohamed R., a 39-year-old French national of North African origin and living in France.

The office said "because of these elements, and the events in London yesterday, the case is being taken on by the federal prosecutor's office," which usually deals with extremist attacks.

French authorities later said the suspect was Tunisian national who was probably drunk and trying to escape a police check...............>

Belgium suspends funding for Palestinian education after schools named for terrorist

September 16, 2018

The Belgian Ministry of Development Cooperation announced on Friday it was suspending its funding to the Palestinian Authority (PA) education system after the latter named two schools after terrorists.

In an apparent mockery of Belgium, the Palestinian educational system named two schools after “the Martyr Dalal Mughrabi” while attempting to circumvent Belgian protests against this policy.

Mughrabi led the most lethal terror attack in Israel’s history, known as the Coastal Road massacre in 1978, during which she and other Fatah terrorists hijacked a bus on Israel’s Coastal Highway, murdering 37 civilians, 12 of them children, and wounding over 70.

In September 2017, the Palestinian Media Watch (PMW) exposed the PA for naming a Belgian-funded school “The Martyr Dalal Mughrabi Elementary School.”
In October 2017, Belgium froze its funding for PA schools and demanded that the name be changed. In July, the name had still not been changed.
Last month, Belgium reiterated that it “unequivocally condemns the glorification of terrorist attacks” through PA schools

Two weeks later, the PA removed the terrorist’s name from the school and renamed it “The Belgian School,” while on the same day it changed the name of a nearby school, The Beit Awwa Elementary School for Girls, to “The Martyr Dalal Mughrabi Elementary School.” Three days later, the PA named a new school “The Second Dalal Mughrabi Republic School.”
The PA announced that the new school “will be funded from state coffers.”
PMW noted that this is supposed to prevent donors from complaining that their money is funding schools named after terrorists.
Responding to the apparent disregard of its policies by the Palestinians, Belgium announced it was suspending funding to the Palestinians.

“Belgium regrets the naming of the two other schools, which were not built with Belgian funds,” the ministry stated, according to Belgium’s Joods Actueel. “The glorification of terrorism or perpetrators of terrorist acts is in no way acceptable. Our country has repeatedly sent the Belgian position to the Palestinian Ministry of Education.”
“As long as terrorism is glorified through school names, Belgium cannot continue to cooperate with the Palestinian Ministry of Education and budgets for school building will be suspended,” the ministry added.
However, “Belgium will remain active in Palestine as a development partner and will focus on improving human rights, with a focus on women’s rights, and on the development of the private sector by promoting digital entrepreneurship,” it stated.
The PA has named at least 28 schools after terrorists and at least three schools after Nazi collaborators. The PA Ministry of Education is directly and solely responsible for the naming of schools.
While Norway, Denmark, Holland, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Nations have condemned the PA for naming educational and cultural buildings that they funded after terrorists, the Palestinians persist in the practice.

Come to the Dark Side. We have cookies. The advantage of insinuations over hard arguments is that they bypass critical thought. No one can respond precisely to a charge that is utterly vague or to accusers who will envelope any reply in a poisonous fog of further insinuations. ~ David Warren, The Guardian There was a time when there was enough freedom that it hardly mattered which brand of crooks ran government. That has not been true for a long time and that captures an important point. The more powerful the government becomes, the more people are willing to do in order to seize the prize, and the more afraid they become when someone else has control. ~ Glenn Harlan Reynolds “The urge to save humanity is almost always only a false-face for the urge to rule it. Belgium's traditional potato "frites" could soon be 3cm (1.1in) smaller than normal, growers have warned.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-45559264

18 September 2018

Pierre Lebrun, head of the Walloon Potato Growers' Association, said lower levels of rainfall had cut potato crop yields by 25%.

"Because the potatoes are smaller at the moment, we will all be eating smaller chips," he told the Sudpresse newspaper.

"Frites" are a signature Belgian dish, often eaten with mayonnaise.

Mr Lebrun said the dry ground also made farmers' work more difficult. "It's the same thing across southern England, the Netherlands, France and western Germany," he said.

Last month, the Guardian newspaper reported that Belgium has applied to the EU for emergency funds to deal with the drought.

"It is a disaster in the fields that the farmers could not irrigate. We record losses of around 30%," Romain Cools, the secretary general of Belgapom, the country's largest potato grower, told the newspaper.

The "frite" is reputed to have originated in Namur in francophone Belgium, where the locals were particularly fond of fried fish. When the River Meuse froze over one cold winter in 1680, people are said to have fried potatoes instead.
